This portfolio contains design projects Xuan has done. Every project has a general description of the project, and most of the projects focus on the design process, design concept introduction, and my role in the project. Some of the projects have downloadable files as deliverables.
An iPhone application that introduces authentic Chinese food with necessary knowledge about the dish, stories and anecdotes about dishes, and adventures to encourage people to try out authentic Chinese food in restaurants and learn more about Chinese culture.
My team designed a future map system for Melbourne, AU for the 24 hour design challenge of the OZCHI 2009 conference. It is a system of geographically associated “stories” as told by the people who experienced them. We presented the interaction of experiencing stories through the use of an e-paper concept. This design won the second prize in the challenge.
The Configural Processing Consortium (CPC) is an annual workshop where configurality researchers get together and discuss current topics in the field. I redesigned the website to help organize the workshop and archive past and future materials, and gave it a clean and professional look.
Series of projects using digital images to explore interaction design opportunities, or to look at topics related to HCI and society, with also a focus on layout design.
My team designed numerous concepts to work as a system for improving cultural tourists’ experiences in the Bloomington Downtown area. We did appearance prototypes for each concept using Adobe Photoshop, and presented them in a cartoon-style story, called “The Adventures of Onion Boy.”
This project is combined with two parts: 1. Simulating and experiencing disabilities to generate insights for design considering accessibility. 2. Designing and video prototyping a museum exhibit: Space Junk Cleaner, with the goal of bringing people the experience of undertaking an urgent task, and the fulfillment of finish it.
My team conducted ethnography research and analysis data gathered to generate insights for making use of local resources. We designed a flowerpot-shaped ambient device to keep volunteers connected with the community garden and encouraged them to go back and work there.
My team designed a contextual-aware device attached to shopping cart to provide real-time information and signal to customers about which nearby products are local ones in order to encourage them to purchase local products.
My team designed an iPhone application for Weight Watchers members. This application provides healthier substitution suggestions for people’s grocery lists as a way to create healthier eating habits.
My team designed a cultural probe to help inform what Chinese girls age 6-12 like, and their cultural preferences, in order to guide the design of an in-store setting of a new store to be opened in Shanghai, China. This was a class project for a cultural probe.
My team redesigned the interface of a thermostat, to make people’s mental model of how thermostat works as the real working principle of a thermostat, to avoid energy abuse caused by the misunderstanding of how thermostat works.
